SSY Calculator: Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Maturity and Interest

Start here · Sukanya Samriddhi made simple

First, what is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed small savings scheme for a girl child. A parent or legal guardian opens the account in the girl’s name and deposits money for 15 years. The balance keeps earning interest until the account matures, 21 years after it was opened. It suits long goals such as higher education or marriage expenses.

Understand the basics, then calculate ↓
21 yearsThe account matures 21 years after opening. You deposit only for the first 15 years.
₹250 – ₹1.5 lakhThe minimum and maximum total deposit allowed in one financial year.
8.2% p.a.Reference rate for October to December 2026. The government reviews it every quarter, so check the latest figure.

How does SSY work?

  1. Open it before she turns 10A parent or legal guardian can open the account at a post office or an authorised bank. There can be one account per girl, and generally up to two girls per family, with an exception for twins or triplets.
  2. Deposit for 15 yearsDeposit anything from ₹250 to ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in one go or in several instalments. If you miss the minimum in a year, the account becomes inactive. You can revive it by paying the missed minimum plus a small penalty.
  3. Let it grow until year 21After 15 years no new deposits are accepted, but the balance keeps earning interest until the account matures in year 21.

If you deposit

₹1,00,000 a year

At 8.2% it could become

about ₹47.9 lakh

You would deposit ₹15 lakh in total over 15 years. The rest is interest. This is an illustration using a constant 8.2% rate; the real rate can change every quarter, so the final amount can be higher or lower.

Why do families consider SSY?

Government-backed: The rate and rules are set by the government, not by the stock market.

Tax treatment: Deposits qualify for the Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime, and the interest and maturity amount are currently tax-free. There is no 80C deduction under the new regime.

Built for a long goal: The lock-in nudges you to keep saving for her education or marriage.

What should you be careful about?

It is not an emergency fund. You can withdraw up to 50% of the balance after the girl turns 18 or passes Class 10, for education. Closing early is allowed only in limited cases.

The rate may change. Do not assume today’s rate will apply for all 21 years.

Do not miss a year. Set a yearly reminder for the minimum ₹250.

How this estimate works

The calculator assumes you deposit the full yearly amount at the start of each financial year for 15 years, and that interest is added once a year at the rate you enter.

In real accounts, interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and credited at year end. Depositing before the 5th of the month, ideally in April, gives the best result.

Rules worth remembering

  • Withdrawal of up to 50% of the previous year-end balance is allowed after 18 or Class 10 pass.
  • After 18, the account can be closed early for the girl’s marriage.
  • The account must be operated by the guardian until she turns 18.

Frequently asked questions

Who can open an SSY account?

A parent or legal guardian can open it for a girl who is a resident of India and below 10 years of age. You will need her birth certificate, and the guardian’s identity and address proof.

How much should I deposit each year?

Anything from ₹250 to ₹1,50,000. Pick an amount you can keep up for all 15 years. Use the slider above to see how much each ₹10,000 adds at maturity.

What happens if I miss a year?

The account becomes inactive. You can revive it before the 15-year deposit period ends by paying the minimum for each missed year plus a small penalty.

Is the maturity amount taxable?

As the rules stand today, the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. The 80C deduction on deposits is available only under the old tax regime. Rules can change, so confirm on the Income Tax Department website.

Can I take money out for her education?

Yes. Once she turns 18 or passes Class 10, you can withdraw up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year, for her higher education.

Does the 8.2% rate stay the same for 21 years?

No. The government notifies the rate every quarter, and your balance earns the rate in force. Treat this calculator as an estimate and rerun it when the rate changes.

This calculator is for information only and is not financial advice. Results are estimates. Always confirm the current rate and rules with the post office or your bank before you decide.
