How to Open a PPF Account: Documents and Steps
Where you can open a PPF account, the documents you need, and the steps to follow, whether you choose a post office or a bank.
Opening a PPF account is simple, and you can do it at a post office or at a bank that offers the scheme. This guide covers who can open an account, what you need to carry, and the steps in order.
Who can open a PPF account?
- Any resident Indian individual can open an account in their own name.
- A parent or guardian can open an account for a minor child, or for a person of unsound mind.
- You can hold only one PPF account in your own name. A second account opened in your name is not valid for the scheme’s benefits.
- Joint accounts are not allowed, and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) cannot open one.
- Non-resident Indians (NRIs) cannot open a new account. If your residency status changes after you open one, you can continue it until maturity, but you cannot extend it.
Documents you need
- The PPF account opening form (Form 1), available at the branch or on the bank’s website.
- Proof of identity and address. Your Aadhaar is the most common choice, along with your PAN card.
- Recent passport-size photographs.
- Nominee details: name, relationship, date of birth and address. Nomination is done with the opening form.
- The first deposit, at least ₹500, by cash, cheque or transfer as the branch allows.
For a minor’s account, carry the child’s birth certificate or other proof of age, and your own identity documents as the guardian. Branches may ask for slightly different papers, so it helps to call or check the website first.
Steps to open the account
- Choose where to open it. A post office or a bank that handles PPF. The interest rate is the same everywhere, so pick the option that is most convenient for you.
- Fill in Form 1 with your details and nominee.
- Submit your documents for KYC (identity and address check), along with the photographs.
- Make the first deposit of at least ₹500.
- Collect your passbook or account details. Keep the account number safe.
Can you open it online?
Some banks let you start the process online, or open the account through net banking if you are already their customer, and then complete verification at a branch. Post offices generally need you to visit in person. Facilities differ from one bank to another, so check your bank’s website or app.
After you open the account
- Deposit at least ₹500 in every financial year, or the account becomes inactive.
- If you can, deposit by the 5th of the month to earn interest for that month. See the interest guide.
- Understand the limits and tax rules in our deposit and tax guide.
- Try different deposit amounts in our PPF calculator.
